Newsnomics AJAY ANGELINA reporter | The South Korean government has decided to provide $5 million in
emergency humanitarian aid, dispatch rescue personnel and provide emergency medical supplies to support Turkey, suffering from massive casualties after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake caused severe destructions in the country on Monday Feb 6,2023.
President Yoon Suk Yeoul expressed his deep condolences to those who lost their lives in this accident and
their bereaved families.
Yoon Said, “I would like to express my deepest condolences to the people who lost their loved ones in the
earthquake,” at the Cabinet meeting in the morning, with deaths estimated at nearly 4,000 people near the
Turkish-Syrian border.
President Yoon Seok-yeol ordered quick relief efforts, including the dispatch of 60 international rescue teams
which are rated as the world's best in rescue and recovery support, to Turkey, where thousands of casualties
have been caused by a major earthquake.
Yoon said, “Turkey is a brother country which protected our freedom by sending many troops without delay when we were invaded by communists in 1950.”
“It is only natural to help our brother country Turkey. Such a massive loss of life should be regarded as an international disaster beyond a national disaster, and we should fulfill our role and responsibility in the international community,” he added
In addition, president Yoon instructed related ministries, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to expedite
the dispatch of rescue personnel and emergency medical supplies using South Korean military transport
planes.
Park Jin, Minister of Foreign Affairs had a telephonic talk with Salih Murat Tamer, a Turkey Ambassador to
South Korea to extend his deepest consolation over the strong earthquake and to relay the Korean govern
ment’s will to render active assistance to the country for its speedy recovery from damage.
Ambassador Tamer expressed appreciation to the government of Korea, Türkiye’s “brother country,” for its
willingness to assist Türkiye swiftly, including humanitarian aid provision and dispatch of a rescue team.
Foreign Minister Park asked for the attention of the government of Türkiye to secure the safety of the Korean nationals residing in the affected area. Both sides agreed to maintain close communication on what is
necessary for the recovery from the damage of the earthquake.
