
Newsnomics AJAY ANGELINA reporter | An earthquake of magnitude 7 has struck off Sulawesi Island of
Indonesia on Wednesday Jan 18, prompting panicked residents in some towns nearest to the epicenter to flee out from the buildings.
The geophysics agency said the quake's epicenter was at a depth of 64 kilometers (39.77 miles) and 141 km
southeast of the town of Melonguane, and reported 10 aftershocks.
North Sulawesi's police reported no immediate damage or casualties.
The local disaster agency reported the shocks of quake in the Maluku islands.
The quake was felt in southern areas of the country and warned of a risk of damage and aftershocks
according to the Philippines seismology agency.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported another earthquake of magnitude 6 struck the
Southwest of Manado earlier on Wednesday.
A resident Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi province has reported by telephone that, “the quake was
felt very strongly for several seconds and people were seen running out of buildings before later returning.”
On Sunday, east of the vast Indonesian archipelago, an earthquake of magnitude 7.6 struck the Eastern New Guinea region in Papua New Guinea, reportedly caused the damage of property and spread panic among the residents.
