coast of Yokosuka, Japan, just south of Tokyo exhibit navies from Australia, India, Japan and the United States.

According to the Hindustan Times newspaper, the multilateral exercise will feature training in anti-submarine
skills, rapid deployment, surveillance and force projection, led by the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Ronald
Reagan.
The bilateral naval exercise first started in 1992 between the navies of India and United States with two more
editions in 1995 and 1996. Japan and Australia first participated in 2007, later in 2020 Australia joined the
Malabar exercise on India’s request in order to contain China in the Indo-Pacific region. The first joint maritime exercise within the framework of ‘Quad’ (four nation alliance of India, Us, Japan, Australia) commenced in 2021, transit the Bay of Bengal in the Western Pacific hosted by the US.
Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and the Indian Navy staged a maritime exercise in the Andaman Sea off
the Malay Peninsula in July 2022. India joined Pitch Black exercise hosted by the Royal Australian Air Force in
August and September 2022, and all four Quad nations participated in the biennial RIMPAC 2022, the largest
international maritime exercise, hosted by the US. From late June to early August 2022.
Australia, India, Japanese and US. Maritime forces routinely operate together in the Indo-Pacific, “fostering a
cooperative approach toward regional security and stability,” according to the US. Indo-Pacific Command.
These four ‘Quad’ nations will seek to increase naval operational cooperation amongst themselves through
activities and drills such as anti-submarine warfare, counter-piracy operations, and gunnery exercise.
Japan will host the 2022 international Malabar naval exercise beginning today.
